CENTENNIAL CANOE

WAITANGI CELEBRATIONS

The 50ft. Maori canoe built by the Ngapuhi tribe at Waikare. in the Bay of Islands, for participation in the centennial celebrations at Waitangi, has been towed to Waitangi and is housed in Ihe Maori meeting-house. Tliis meeting-house is erected on the site where thp Maoris gathered during the signing of the treaty, and is on the opposite side of tile Waitangi River to th- Treaty House.

Built bv the Nnapuhi tribe, the canoe is handsomely carved and presented a fine picture as it was being taken to Waitangi. A larger canoe is being completed at Kerikeri.
