“GOOD NEIGHBOURS”
NUFFIELD’S BENEFACTIONS HIS LATEST IDEA LONDON, Dec. 1. Another gift by Lord Nuffield—£lo,ooo lo start a "Good Neighbours” fund ot Oxford —is announced. The Pressed Steel Company of Great Britain, whose works at Cowley adjoin the Morris factory, also has given £SOOO. The fund will make grants or loans to people in Oxford and the surrounding areas who are unemployed or have been placed in exceptional difficulties as the result of the war. It is the wish of the united donors that special consideration should le given to meet financial obligations in respect of rent, rates, housing mortgages, insurance premiums, contributions to friendly societies or medical services, assistance in cases of illness requiring additional nourishment, specialist’s services, or convalescent home treatment, schools' tees for dependents, and a replacement of clothes or household equipment.
It is hoped that the fund will be augmented by donations from other employers and individuals.
Trustees have been appointed. There will be an advisory committee representing employers, organisations of social workers, cxservice men, and work people.
Lord Nuffield's benefactions in recent years now total £14,777,000, including three gifts of over £2,000,000 each. Since June he has given away £177,000, and made a promise of another £IO,OOO.
