SAMOAN TITLE AWARD

ELDER SON SUCCEEDS FORMER N.Z. STUDENT (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Dec. 29, 9 a.m.) APIA, Dec, 27. Shortly after the Malietoa died in July last, loane Viliamu, the second son, was elected, but he was objected to by the descendants of two of the Malietoa who had held the title during the nineteenth century. These objections came before the court in October and were determined during a hearing lasting five days this month, the decision being in favour of the “son of” the late holder. Ati Tanu, the elder son, returned to Samoa in August, having been a student at St. Stephen’s College, Auckland, and Paerata Methodist Col-i lego. On the court’s decision, loane Viliamu voluntarily retired in favour of the elder son, who was duly appointed Malietoa by his people on December 15.
