TAUPATA ASHORE
SIGHTED BY PLANE TORY CHANNEL MISHAP CREW BELIEVED SAFE AID FROM WELLINGTON (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Anchor Steam Ship Company’s 268-ton motor ship Taupata is ashore near Te Awaiti whaling station, Tory Channel, Queen Charlotte Sound. She left Nelson for Lyttelton yesterday but the weather forced her to put into Picton. Presumably, she lesuined her journey this morning, but ran aground at 9.20 a.m. A plane from Nelson sighted her and reported her position to the company’s Wellington agents. T. and W. Young. Limited. They state that as far as is known the crew are in no danger and assistance is being despatched. The master of the Taupata is Captain J. A. I-lughan. the first officer. Mr. R. F. Greeuslade, and the second officer, Mr. E. H. Wilson are all residents of Wellington.
The Taupata was built by G. T Niccol, Auckland, in 1930.
