NEW ENROLMENTS
GISBORNE RECRUITS 100 MEN FOR BOARDS j EXAMINATIONS SATURDAY FIXTURE AT RUATORIA I The lull in seasonal work, and the | growing acceptance on the part of I young men of the district of the fact i that '.heir services are likely to be j required urgently, have resulted in a marked improvement in the flow of recruits for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. During the past week, there have teen more numerous enrolments for active service at the Gisborne office of the Army Deportment than for the J previous month, and the indications j are that the quota for the Third ; Echelon from this district will have | a good start by the New Year, i In order to clear up the list of [present in the hands of the Army De- ; pnrtmenl for this district. medical boards have been arranged for Salur- , day. December 30, and will sit in Gisborne and Ruatoria. There are about 40 men awaiting examination at the East Coast centre, most or these being Maori recruits; while at Gisborne there are about (50 men. half Europeans ana half Maoris, awaiting I attention by medical boards. From this total of appro innately 100 men, there should be forthcoming a good contribution to the strengths of both the Maori Battalion and the Special New Zealand Force. Some of the men for examination on this occasion were previously before the i ledical officers, but were stood down for minor complaints, which have been rectified since then, or at least improved.
