GISBORNE AMATEUR SPORT IN RHODESIA MIDDLE-WEIGHT TITLE £ A former Gisborne amateur wrestler, Frank Hayward, has made a name for himself in sporting circles in Rhodesia, according lo a lotto" received I y Mr. C. L. Davy from Mr. George Hayward, a brother of Hie wrestler. George and Fran'.: Hayward left Gisborne four years ago to ply their trade as carpenters .in othe" lands and to see something of the world. Frank, who was then about .17 years of age. was a star amateur matman here.

The principal bout at a wrestling meeting held in Luanshya, Rhodesia, on November 17 was one in which Frank successfully defended his middle-weight championship against Seaman Pat Holmsby, ex-middle-weight champion of the Royal Navy. The following is an extract from a publication issued prior io the match: “Seaman Pat Holmsby. who has wrestled such famous wrestlers as Ben Sherman, Dory Delion and Kudu White, will be the first wrestler to whom the popular Frank Hayward has not had to concede weight, in Rhodesia.”

Holmsby was incapacitated in the fifth round.

One-third of the gross gate takings was donated to war funds.
