Lister—Lennane.-*-An engagement is announced between William Kirk, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Lister, Waerenga-a-hika, and Ethel, youngest daughter of Mrs. J. C. Lennane, Mangapapa. Shine— Ferguson. —The engagement is announced of Lawrence, only son of Mr. W. Shine and the late Mrs. Shine, Auckland, to Retha Margaret, only daughter of Mrs. Ferguson and the late Mr. Archie Ferguson.
Engagement Celebrated
At the week-end Mr. and Mrs. J. Hceney entertained in a delightful manner at the home of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. White, Salisbury road, in celebration of the engagement of their son, Mr. D. Heeney, to Miss Nola Carson, the occasion affording a number of relatives a pleasant opportunity of offering, their felicitations.
Informal Five 0 ’Clock Party
On Tuesday Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Cave, Mangatuna station, who are on holiday at their seaside cottage at Wainui Beach, invited a number of friends, many of whom are staying at the beach, to a jolly 5 o’clock party. The weather was delightfully cool after the thunderstorm earlier in tire afternoon, and refreshments were served out-of-doors.
Christmas Five 0 ’Clock Party
At the week-end Mr. and Mrs. R. Thomson invited a number of friends to a jolly 5 o’clock party at their home in Palmerston road. Shaded dahlias were used with artistic effect in the decoration of the drawing-room, and refreshments and savouries were served from a flowerdecked table in the dining-room.
Tire hostess looked smart in a frock of green cloque printed in a Paisley design, and her daughter, Miss Noeline Thomson, wore a becoming frock of black and white patterned faille.
Farewell Party
The delightful informal party given by Flight-Lieutenant G. A. Nicholls and Mrs. Nicholls at their home at Wainui Beach on Tuesday night afforded a number of intimate friends a pleasant opportunity of extending their good wishes to Major A. S. Muir, who is accompanying the First Echelon of the Special Military Force as transport officer.
Hydrangeas and carnations were artistically combined in the decoration of the drawing-room, and in the dining-room, where supper was served, a bowl of pink geraniums beautified the table. Community singing and games were arranged for the entertainment of the guests.
Informal Six 0 ’Clock Party
A delightful informal 0 o’clock party was given by Mrs. P. Hockley at her home in Ballance street on Saturday as a welcome to her son, Second Lieutenant P. R. Hockley, who is spending his Christmas leave in Gisborne, and also to celebrate the announcement of the engagement of her daughter, Miss Margaret Hockley, to Mi*. J. H. Lawton, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Lawton, Rutene road. The weather was all that could be desired, and refreshments were served in the garden beneath a large shady tree, hydrangeas being used_ with artistic effect in the decoration of the charmingly arranged table. Congratulations and good wishes were showered upon Miss Hockley and her fiance, and, in the absence of her father, Mr. P. Hockley, the health of the newly-engaged couple was proposed by Lieutenant Hockley.
Farewell Party
The settlers of the Tiniroto district paid a fine tribute to Private B. Hayden, a member of the First Echelon of the Special Military Force, when a large and representative gathering assembled at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. Longdell, Tiniroto, on Monday night to bid him good-bye. Decorations of shaded Iceland poppies, intermingled with delicate greenery, created a festive atmosphere. The weather was delightful and dancing on the lawn in the moonlight and community singing provided entertainment in variety.
During the evening Mr. Baty made a presentation to Private Hayden, at the same time extending the good wishes of his many friends in the district.
Supper was served informally. Mrs. Longdell was wearing a smart frock of black cloque printed in a floral design.
Jolly All-Day Party
The annual Boxing Day party given by Mr. and Mrs: J. L. Cowan, Makarori, is always eagerly awaited by a large number of friends, and Tuesday’s gathering, despite a thunderstorm, was as delightful as its predecessors.
The guests met on the Makarori Beach and the morning was devoted to bathing and Ashing, after which an adjournment was made to the homestead, picturesquely stiuatod on the hilltop.
The rooms were gay with mixed flowers in lemon and orange tonings, and a buffet luncheon was served from a table adorned with nasturtiums.
A stroll over the hills and through the bush was enjoyed in the afternoon, and after the evening meal community singing and dancing to music contributed by the host, his daughter, Miss Nancy Cowan, and Mr. B. Bright provided entertainment in variety.
