Scramble for Clothes

An exceptionally large wave which swept high on to the Westshore beach, Napier, on, Christmas Day, swamped several groups of clothes which had been placed above high water mark by bathers. Shoes, stockings and all forms of apparel were washed out to sea, while in some cases they were merely moved higher up the beach by the wave. There was a wild scramble out of'the water by those bathers who had left their clothes on the beach, but in the majority of cases they were too late to recover their belongings. Several sun-bathers who were lying on the beach received a rude shock when they suddenly found themselves lying in several inches of swirling water, and those who were bathing near the water’s edge were swept off their feet and carried several yards
