WIGGIN’S “HAT-TRICK” RAILWAY HANDICAP H. LONG’S SECOND CUP BROWN HOLDS RECORD By “Trenton” When H. N. Wiggins steered Bronwen to victory in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie yesterday, it was his third success in that race in as many years. He rode Disdain last year, and in 1937 was on Stretto. Wiggins has ridden with remarkable success over short distances during recent months. Auckland Cup Riders Cheval de Voice’s win in this year’s Auckland Cup gave his rider, H. Long, his second success in the race, as he steered the same horse to victory last year. However, more than a single success in the Auckland Cup has been common in the past. A Brown holds the record with four wins. He was on Nelson when he scored in three successive years, 1885-86-87. and three years later he was successful on Crackshot. The only other jockey with more than two wins was J. Sceats, who won on Antares in 1897 and on Blue Jacket in 1899 and 1900. Double successes have been credited to A. Matthews on Ariel in 1878 and 1879; G. Williams, on Salvage in 1883 and Tlie Poet in 1884: L. Hewitt, on St. Michael in 1901 and Siege Gun in 1902; J. Buchanan, on Mahutonga in 1904 and Master Delaval in 1906; C. Jenkins, on All Red in 1908 and 1909; B. Deeley, on Putty in 1905 and Karo in 1919; the late R. Reed, on Depredation in 1916 and Rapine in 1925; the late K. Voitre, on Admiral Drake in IS3I and Gold Trail in 1934; L. J. Ellis, on Cuddle in 1935 and 1936.
Opened His Account The former Gisborne apprentice rider P. Fenton, who until lately was attached to H. Martin’s stable and has now transferred to Hastings, rode his first winner yesterday. He has ridden horses into minor placings on a number of occasions, and his win on Malacca at Hastings may he the forerunner to many more. Fenton has • a good seat and an excellent pair of hands. Badly Away Disdain, fourth in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie yesterday, got a very poor start and was flying at the finish. She should get a sprint event at the meeting. Daughter of Nightmarch.
Serenata, who finished third in the Queen’s Plate at Ellerslie yesterday, is a three-year-old daughter of Nightmarch and Praise, thus a full sister to the consistent Russian Ballet. At her first start this season Serenata beat several smart hacks in the Ahuriri Handicap at the Napier Park meeting, but she did not have the best of luck in her two subsequent starts. Attractive Colt
Cillas, who finished third in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, is an attractive-looking two-year-old colt by ‘Diatomous from Monanui. He had started only once previously, winning the Novice Stakes of five furlongs at the Whangarei meeting on November 14. He should open his account before long. Above the Average
Scarteen, a winner on Saturday at Dunedin and again yesterday, when he beat a.good field of hacks in the Fernhill Handicap, is a three-year-old fullbrother to Vintage and promises to be something above the average.
