SLENDER TIES

BONDS OF EMPIRE REASON FOR STRENGTH NEUTRAL APPRECIATION GERMAN COMPARISON (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Dec. 27, 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 26. The New York Heralcl-Tribune, in an editorial commenting on the reported appointment of the Australian Minister of Supply, Mr. R. G. Casey, as Australian Minister at Washington, says: “In an age when centralisation has been the rage and the suppression of freedom of small nations and minorities lias become a major policy, it is encouraging to see unquestioned success accompanying the British policy of decentralisation in fostering the largest possible autonomy and self-government for Imperial units. “Even the tie through the British Crown has been tenuous, but few doubt it is stronger than that binding the Austrians, Czechs and Poles to Germany. The British Empire’s strength resides in the weakness of its bonds.”
