GISBORNE SEED CROPS

EFFECT OF STORM DIFFICULTIES EXPECTED The storm has increased the difficulties of the ryegrass seed harvest, as well as being responsible for the loss of much of the seed. The cutting of the earliest of the crops commenced only yesterday morning, and slow progress was being made because of a heavy bottom growth. The hailstorm in the afternoon battered the bottom growth down to a thick mat in many paddocks, and increased the cutting problem, as well as knocking out much of the seed from the heads. Cutting was not resumed this morning, but slower progress than yesterday was expected when the machines began their work once more.
