THE WEATHER Last Night’s Forecast General situation: The last of a recent series of westerly depressions lies across the centre of the Dominion. Pressure has risen in the south. Forecast: Winds between south and west prevailing, moderate to strong in exposed positions but gradually decreasing. Seas: In New Zealand waters, rather rough about Cook and Foveaux Straits, north of Farewell Spit and south of East Cape, elsewhere slight or moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to strong but .gradually decreasing southerly to south-westerly winds; seas rough, but moderating. Weather: Fair in the western and southern areas of the South Island, elsewhere changeable with occasional rain: some heavy showers likely and. in places, thunderstorms; conditions gradually improving from the south, however. Temperatures: Moderate. To-day’s North Island Report Overcast and cloudy conditions were prevalent at 9 a.m. to-dav at most meteorological stations in the North Island, with the exception of Tiritiri and East Cape, where there were blue skies with detached clouds. In the past 24 hours 4.48 m of rain had fallen at Wellington. Compared with yesterday, the temperature at Gisborne had dropped 18 degrees, the readings being: Napier, 06 degrees; Auckland, Tauranga, and East Cape, 08; Opoliki, 02; Gisborne, 00; Wellington, 59. Visibility was generally good, and seas were slight to moderate. Conditions were calm at Tauranga and Napier, with slight breezes from a north-westerly direction for the most part prevailing elsewhere. Midday Forecast

General Situation: The depression over Cook Strait area is moving slowly eastward and pressure has risen, in the north and south, moderate to fresh south to west winds soon prevailing.

Forecast: Unsettled weather, with intermittent rain but improving from the west. Temperature: Cool to moderate. Seas: Slight to moderate but rising.
