BRIEF INTERLUDE

STORM PASSES OVER SPORTS AT ORMOND AXEMEN AND HORSEMEN INJURY TO RIDER Tents and motor cars provided welcome shelter for patrons of the Ormond Sports Club’s Boxing Bay meeting when a heavy thunderstorm broke over the district at 1.20 p.m. The downpour was accompanied by a fall of hail stones, some of which measured half an inch across. There was a large gathering of residents at the meeting, but the severity of the storm did not mar the enthusiasm of the competitors. Warm sunshine followed the storm, and in less than an hour after the rain commenced the programme was in full swing once again. The first rider of the day, W. J. Park, Whatatutu, had the misfortune to meet with a mishap as a competitor in the maiden jump. He was thrown from his horse at the second fence, and suffered head and shoulder injuries. The services of Sister Pritchard, district nurse, Matawai, were requisitioned, and after receiving first aid Mr. Park was conveyed by the St. John Ambulance to the Cook Hospital. This was the only untoward incident in a programme of horse events, chopping and sports races which provided an interesting day’s sport for the country and town patrons.
