MUTINY IN GAOL
IRISH REPUBLICANS WARDERS LOCKED IN CELL FURNITURE SMASHED HOSE QUELLS RIOT (Eire. Tel. Copyright—United Tress Assn.) (Reed. Dec. 26, 2.50 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 25. A mutiny broke out in Londonderry gaol, where 60 Republican suspects have been interned for the duration of the war. Forty-five who volunteered for exercise in the morning overpowered the five wardens, locked them >n the cells and also locked the two steel doors of the corridor. Then they fired the bedding, smashed the furniture and demonstrated from tlie windows, overlooking the street, displaying two Republican flags. Police and soldiers arrived at the gaol and their colleagues released the imprisoned warders. Plumbers reopened the steel doors with acetylene burners.
The prisoners made a final stand in a cell armed with nail-studded boards. The police stormed the cell vainly and then the fire brigade turned on a hose and compelled the men to surrender after five hours’ siege.
