86-MILE BOAT RACE
Efforts are being made to organise for the New Year a race by boat and canoe from the Fitzherbert bridge, , Palmerston North, to the Manawatu Heads. The intention of the commititee, if sufficient entries are forthcoming, is to start the boats from the bridge on the morning of Sunday, December 31; the first official halt will be made at Shannon, where the night will be spent. From there the competitors will proceed to the heads, arriving during the afternoon of New Year’s Day. The total distance is 86 miles, and competitors will have the current with them. The last race over the course took place not long before the Great War,' and was won by a crew which used a specially-built boat and covered the distance in the good time of eight hours.
