MINOR ACCIDENTS

FEW IN GISBORNE WAIOEKA MISHAPS Apart from the fatal accident on the Tiniroto highway early on Sunday morning, motoring mishaps on the Gisborne roads during the Christmas week-end were few, and none was of a serious nature. The volume of holiday traffic was as heavy as usual. All the mishaps reported were on the Gis-borne-Opotilci, via Waioeka Valley, highway. Half a mile up Otoko Hill from Mr. Swarbrick’s residence a car driven by Mr. M. Murray, Hangaroa, came into collision at 3 p.m. on Sunday with an Auckland vehicle driven by Mr. Thomas J. Flynn. There were seven Maoris in Mr. Murray’s car and some of the occupants suffered minor bruises and slight cuts. While travelling in the direction of Gisborne, Mr. Leslie A. Davies, Tauranga, and his three passengers were fortunate to escape injury at. 3 p.m. on Saturday when the vehicle overturned at a corner three and a-half miles on the Gisborne side of Matawai. There was some loose shingle on the bend and Mr. Davies was unable to regain control after the car started to skid. He and the other occupants were shaken, but it was soon found that all had escaped with a few minor abrasions and bruises. The car was badly damaged on one side.

At 1.30 p.m. on Saturday Mr. Selwyn E. Taylor, Otahuhu, was involved in a collision with a car driven by a Mr. Henry, the mishap occurring in the Waioeka Valley at a point 26 miles on the Gisborne side of Opotiki. No one was hurt, and the vehicles were not extensively damaged.
