WHISKY IMPORTS
REPORTED ARRANGEMENT THIRD LICENSING PERIOD Whisky suppliers in the United Kingdom are said to have made arrangements with the Governmentthat will ensure the importation of spirits in the first half of next year into the Dominion.
As in the two licensing periods of this year, whisky and other spirits were on the restricted list for tne third period, starting in January. The difficulty of importation this year v/as overcome by an agreement with tnr Government whereby no call was to be made upon sterling funds for payment for 12 months. It is believed that negotiations between whisky interests and the Minister of Customs relating to the third period extended over some weeks.
The terms of the agreement have not been announced, but it is said that some sterling remittances are involved in due course in respect of this year, and that there will be investments for unspecified periods in Government securities of money paid by importers for whisky imported in the third period. Apparently the obligation of importers to suppliers will end when payment for whisky is made to a trading bank.
