BURNED TO DEATH
TRAGIC HOTEL FIRE EIGHT PERSONS PERISH FRANTIC LEAP FOR LIFE 18-MONTHS BABY SAVED (Klc'c. T«l. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Dec. 26, 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 25. A tragic hotel fire occurred at Goomeri, 171 miles north-west from Brisbane, early on Saturday morning, when eight persons perished. Twenty-three guests were trapped in the upper storey of the Grand Hotel, a large two-storeyed weatherboard building. Most of them tried to escape over the balcony. Two persons were killed in leaping to the road. Several were caught by men waiting below, including an 18-months-old baby, whose mother, after crying out ‘'Save my baby!,” was herself overcome by smoke and disappeared in the flames. The licensee, John Parker, died from burns and injuries after jumping to the bitumen road. His wife was burned to death, and also a barmaid and a girl telephonist. It is feared that others may be under the debris.
