NAVAL GALLANTRY
AWARDS ANNOUNCED POSTHUMOUS BESTOWAL MOHAWK’S COMMANDER (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m RUGBY, Dec. 22. A number of naval awards and promotions have been gazetted. These included the posthumous award of the medal of the military division, of the 0.8. E. for gallantry to the late Commander R. F. Jolly who, when the H.M.S. Mohawk was attacked by enemy aircraft and suffered a large number of casualties, insisted on remaining on the bridge although fatally wounded and brought his ship into harbour. Other members of the crew of the Mohawk are to receive awards of mention in the despatches. Awards are made to the officers and men of the submarine HALS. Spearfish for courage, seamanship and resolution in bringing their ship safe home after many prolonged, violent enemy attacks which almost put her out of action. It is announced that the King has sanctioned the publication on New Year’s Day of a further list of honours, decoiations and awards approved by him for the Royal Navy.
