NEWS OF THE DAY

The Gisborne Herald will not be published on Monday, Christmas Day, nor on Monday, January 1.

Shearing on the Coast This week’s fine weather on the Coast has helped shearing gangs to make up some of the time lost in the earlier part of the season, and some good tallies were recorded during the past few days. One farmer who did not begin shearing until Monday expected to have his flock completed by noon to-day, the tallies averaging out at 800 sheep a day.—Special

White Butterflies.

The indications for the past few months were that the white butterfly pest in the Opotiki district had been brought under control, but following heavy rain recently the butterflies have appeared in large numbers and it would appear that there will be a further increase in the next few weeks. The butterflies are flying about in clusters and crops are already being noticeably attacked by the caterpillars. Few parasites are to be seen in the district.

“Money Spent on Liquor "This man comes into town with a few pounds and spends it all on liquor and, as can be seen by the charge sheet, he has only 5s left," said Senior-Sergeant J. F. H. Macnamara in the Police Court this morning When a labourer, Alfred Charles Young, aged 62, appeared before Messrs. W. E. GofTe and A. A. Fraser, .T.Ps.. and pleaded guilty to a charge of having been found drunk yesterday afternoon in Lowe street, having been twice previously convicted of drunkenness in the past six months. Senior-Sergeant Macnamara said that Young was a good, hard-working man when he was not drinking and if he was given the opportunity would go out of town. He was convicted and fined ss. Another labourer, aged 56. was a first offender and was convicted and fined the amount of his bail, 10s.
