WINTER SHOW EFFORT GISBORNE COMPETITION PIG COUNCIL’S RULES ENTRIES CLOSE MARCH 1 5 Arrangements have been made by the Tairawhiti District Pig Cn’.meii to hold a bacon competition in conjunction with the Poverty Bay Winter Show. Such competitions have proved very interesting and popular .in several other districts, notably Whangarei and Hamilton, and much interest was taken in a proposal a year or so ago to hold a simile: competition in Gisborne. It if expected, therefore, that pig-raisers in the district will welcome the opportunity of taking part in the competition now arranged.
Conditions for the competition have been drawn up by the pig council. The competition will be open to all, and exhibits should have a weight range of 125 to 15,')'.b. dead weight, and 175 to 205!b. live weight. No exhibitor will be allowed to enter more than two pigs. Payment will be made for the pigs on April 10 at rates not less than those ruling on the day of killing.
, All pigs in the competition will be killed at the Kaiti freezing works and cured by Messrs. Evans. Limited. The judging of the bacon will be done by officers of the Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with officers of the Meat Board. Pigs may be delivered at any time between February 1 and March 27.
Entries will be limited to the firs'. 50 received, the fee for each entr\ being 7s Gd. The prizes will be ns follows:- First, £lO and challenge cup valued at £5; second, £7 10 i c third, £5; fourth, £2 10s. A special prize has been donated by Messrs. Evans, Limited, for a member of a pig club gaining most point: The judging of the bacon will rw carried out on the standard measurement system, which corresponds to the block-test system for lambs. COAST FIELD DAY SIX ’PIG CLASSES ' The Tairawhiti District Pig Council has arranged to hold a field day at the Tikitiki saleyards on February 14 for members of the Ruatoria, Whakawhitiria. Tikitiki, Rangitukia. Hicks Bay and Te Kapa pig clubs. The occasion will be a miniature show, and will give members of these clubs an opportunity of show competition by members in more favoured localities. There will be a class each for a Tamworth and Berkshire sow over 10 months old, a class for boars of the same breeds and classes also for porkers and baconers. First and second prizes will be awarded, and in addition Mix G. R. Sefton, Puha, has offered a prize for most points in the .Berkshire classes.
The judge .will be Mr. G. Brown, Puha, and Mr. Sefton will be the associate judge.
