HICKS BAY SCHOOL

ANNUAL PICNIC TEACHER FAREWELLED' (Herald Correspondent.) The scholars of the Wharekahika Native School were favoured with excellent, weather for their annual picnic. There was a splendid attendance of parents and friends, amongst them being Major Prowse, of the Salvation Army, and Mr. Anderson, Napier, and Miss Mana Thompson, Tolaga Bay, assistant teachers of the children. Winners of races were:—Long Pace: Rodney Evans, 1; Nehe Tehei, iun., 2. Long Race, Girls: Sarah Whenua, 1; j Grannie Dewes, 2. Senior Boys’ Race: R. PahuVu. 1; M. Stainton. 2 Middle Boys’ Race: J. Dewes, 1; J. Stainton, 2. Senior Girls' Race: Sarah Whenua, 1: H. Jensen, 2. Middle Girls' Race: Pat Evans, 1. Junior Girls’ Race: Phylis Evans, 1; Sally Tihore, 2. Apple , Eating, girls and boys: Sally Tihore,' 1; Phyllis Evans, 2; Wheel-barrow | Race: Sarah Whenua and B. Reedy, 1. j Potato Race: Sarah Whenua, 1; Pam Reedy, 2. Three-legged Race, girls: j Sarah Whenua and H. Jensen, 1.1

Three-legged Race, boys: James Dewes and Hori Jensen, 1. Monkey Race: Hori Jensen, 1; R. Pahuru, 2. Greasy Pig: James Dewes. Tug of war: Girls beat boys. Treasure Hunt: Elaine McClutchie. A dance was held in the evening in the Hinemaurea Hall to raise funds I for school prizes and also to farewell the headmaster, Mr. Trimmer, who is transferring to the Hiruharama School. As a token of appreciation for his services during the time he has been in the district a presentation was made of a travelling rug and a suitcase after a speech by Mr. Tipiwai Houkamau on behalf of the school committee and parents. Mr. Trimmer replied thanking the people for their kindness. Amongst those present at the dance were Miss June Kaua, wearing a navy blue taffeta frock, and Miss Karauti, assistant teacher at the Te Araroa School, in a green sa’in frock. A dainty supper was served.
