REMARKABLE ATHLETE
PLAYED SOCCER AT 65 It has always been my opinion that once a man passes 40 years of age he should give up the pursuit of strenuous sport and regard as a fallacy that he can be as good as he was at 20, states an Australian writer. There are always exceptions to the rule. Several cases have occurred in Australia of men playing strenuous sport years after the ordinary individual has hung up his equipment. But surely this must be in the nature of a record! The Rev. John F. C. Denning, vicar of Denford (Berkshire), who played Association fbotball until he was 65 and cricket until he was 74, died recently at the age of 85. He was a remarkably versatile sportsman. He took up cricket in 1888 and was a bowler of merit. As a footballer he also excelled and played in more than 2000 matches.
In 1874, Mr. Denning was a member of the Shropshire Wanderers’ team which reached the semi-final of the English Cup, while in 1879 he ran third in a 50-mile race at Stamford Bridge.
