MAYOR CRITICISED
ACTING AS CHAIRMAN HAMILTON MASS MEETING ACTION DEFENDED (Per Press Association.) HAMILTON, this day. A protest against the action of the Mayor, Mr. H. D. Caro, in presiding at the mass meeting held at Claudelands on December 4 and in wearing his robes and chain of office, was made by Cr. C. Croall at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last evening. Cr. Croall said the Mayor should have stopped the two speakers, Messrs. A. J. Sinclair and Gainor Jackson, who had made a political attack on the Government. , Cr. C. Lafferty supported Cr. Croall and expressed the hope that no similar meeting would ever be held again in Hamilton. He hoped the Mayor would not again preside at a meeting which developed into a political debacle. In replying, Mr. Caro said it was a prerogative of the Mayor to use his own judgment, and it was his duty to accept the invitation of any body of citizens who asked him to preside at a meeting, irrespective of their political affinities. He was proud to take the chair at the meeting in question and to wear his robes.
“May you continue to do your duty in the same way,” said Cr. T. G. Reynolds amid the applause of the majority of the council.
