DIPLOMAT PRISONER
BRITON IN GERMANY U.S. MOVE ASKED (Reed. Dec. 20, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 19. The Government has asked the United States Embassy in Berlin to make representations to the German Government concerning the detention of the British diplomat, Mr. George G. M: Vereker. A message dispatched from London on Monday stated that Mr. George G. M. Vereker, who has been the counsellor at the British Embassy in Moscow, had been taken prisoner in Germany while en route to England before taking up his new appointment in Bolivia. Mr. Vereker went to Riga from Moscow 10 day’s previously arid embarked in an Estonian ship t'oi Stockholm. A German cruiser intercepted and took the ship to Swinemaunde, on the north-east coast of Germany, whei’e Mr. Vereker was taken off.
The oiiicial news agency revealed that the Gestapo checked Mr. Vereker’s journey at all points, this accounting for the unexpected interception in a part of the Baltic now rgarded as the domain of the Russian fleet.
