LOYAL LASCARS
90 RETURN TO SHIP PLEDGES IN PRAYER SYDNEY, Nov. 29. Las; evening, 90 Lascar members oi the crew of a British freighter pledged their loyalty to the British Empire in prayer. They agreed to lake their ship on the high seas and to obey the will of the master and the owners.
Their pledges made in prayer are irrevocable.
Khan Bahadur Fazlul Karim, deputy shipping master of Calcutta, who was invited to Australia to try to overcome Lascar discontent, led the gathering in prayer. “Strong influences have been at work to cause the trouble,’’, he said later. “In many cases, the seeds of communism have been sown.
■'Disaffection, however, is one of the problems that follows in the wake of war. In the Great War, even white members of the crews of some ships expressed discontent.
“This Lascar discontent is just a phase. There is nothing to worry about.”
