CHRISTMAS FAIR
TE KARAKA INSTITUTE BRISK BUSINESS DONE TENNIS TOURNEY HELD (Herald Correspondent.) A Christmas fair arranged by the Te Karaka Women’s Institute under the leadership of Mesdames J. V. Castles and H. Allan and held in the Recreation Ground was well patronised, though the attendance was affectby the threatening weather conditions which later culminated in heavy rain.
Stall-holders did brisk business in Christmas novelties, cakes, produce, and jumble sale goods, while the afternoon tea and ice creams proved very popular.
The institute is indebted to the Te Karaka Tennis Club for the use of its courts to hold 3 tennis tournament in. conjunction with the fair The tournament, which was organised by Mrs. H. O'Connell, was marred somewhat by the weather and the number of matches had to be reduced. Nevertheless, some interesting games were witnessed, the winners of Section 1 being E. 'Cranswick and Miss R. Ruru, who, in the final, defeated J. de Winter and Miss S. Appleton, 15-8. In Section II the final match was won by K. Clarkson and Mrs. C. Gaukrodger, jun., against J. L. Clarkson and Miss E. Castles with a score of 20-18.
Players in the tournament included: E. Cranswick, H. Sidney, J. and K. Clarkson, S. Te Paa, E. Bradley, M, and R. Fisher, J. and R. Stephenson, J. G. Appleton, J. de Winter and C, Hardacre; Mesdames E. Cranswick, (H. O’Connell, J. V. Castles, R. H. Brown, Tait, J. L. Clarkson, Gaukrodger (2), and G. Bush; Misses N. Coates, R. Ruru, V. Seamons, 'S. Appleton, S. Luttrell, M. Stephenson, E. Castles and M. Fisher.
