PATRIOTIC GIFT
DUNEDIN CITIZEN DONATION OF £SOO (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. _At a meeting of the Otago Provincial Patriotic'Council yesterday morning, the following letter from Mr. S. Saltzman, which was received with applause, was read by the Mayor:— “As a citizen of the British Empire, which is engaged in the gigantic task* of maintaining liberty and freedom, and as destiny has brought me into existence many years too soon, so depriving me of participating physically in doing something for this great cause which the British Empire is fighting for, I therefore deem it a duty to help at least in a monetary way those young and valiant men who are willing to sacrifice their lives for their country’s cause.
“We feel particularly proud of our New Zealand boys who assisted in the defeat of the monster who destroyed so many innocent lives while it was at large, and I therefore enclose a cheque for £SOO for the patriotic fund, which may be disposed of in whatever direction you may deem it necessary. “I may also say, should occasion arise when my help is required, I shall deem it my duty to assist in whatever way possible.” The following is a list of public gifts made by Mr. Saltzman in past years:—
