APPLES OR MILK?
CENSUS TO BE TAKEN PROPOSAL FOR SCHOOLS HAWKE’S BAY BOARD An apple a day, the Hawke’s Bay Education Board thinks, would be a worthy accompaniment to the school child’s milk ration. Moreover, it would provide a market for surplus fruit if such an idea were adopted. A letter from the Education Department. read at the monthly meeting of the board in Napier on Friday, advised that the Health Department sought co-operation in endeavouring to reduce the amount of milk returned from schools. The notion was that headmasters and others responsible for the ordinary supervision of daily supplies should ensure that only quantities which are reasonably expected to be used be ordered. While agreeing to bring the matter to the notice ol' those in charge of its schools, the board discussed the possibility of supplying apples with the milk. The chairman, Mr. G. A. Maddison. broached the subject, and other members welcomed the idea. It was decided finally to take a census to find out the number of pupils taking milk, the number who -would prefer an apple to milk, and the number who do not take milk who would take an apple a day.
