DIPLOMAT TAKEN
CAPTURE BY GERMANS BRITON FROM RUSSIA VOYAGE TO ENGLAND TRACED BY GESTAPO (Elec. Tel, Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Dec. 19, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 18. Mr. George G. M. Vereker, who has been the counsellor at the British Embassy in Moscow, has been taken prisoner in Germany while en route to England before taking up his new appointment in Bolivia. Mr. Vereker went to Riga from Moscow iO days ago and embarked in an Estonian ship for Stockholm. , A German cruiser intercepted and took the ship to Swinemaunde, on the north-east coast of Germany, where Mr. Vereker was taken off. The official news agency reveals that the Gestapo checked Mr. Vereker’s journey at all points, this accounting for the unexpected interception in a part of the Baltic now regarded as the domain of the Russian fleet. Nothing is yet known in official quarters in London of the circumstances. It cannot be confirmed that Mr. Vereker is in Germany, though ii is a fact that he was in a neutral ship on his way from Tallinn to Stockholm, which was intercepted by a German warship. If Mr. Vereker has been detained, despite diplomatic privilege, the United States Government, which has taken charge of British interests in Germany, will be asked to take up the matter and procure his release. Mr. Vereker was coming home from Moscow 7 to prepare to take lip an appointment in Bolivia.
