Jolly Surprise Party

On Saturday night a delightful informal party was given by Mr. and Mrs. T. A. N. Corson at their riverside home in celebration of the birthday of Mr. Thomas Corson, the occasion affording old friends and members of the staff of Messrs. Thomas Corson and Son a pleasant opportunity of offering their felicitations to the chief guest.

Bridge tables were arranged in life drawing-room, which looked inviting with its decorations of mixed flowers in gay tonings, and in the diningroom, where supper was served, a .large birthday cake was in the centre of the table.

The hostess was smart, in a Burgundy red skirt and a gold lame cocktail coat. Mrs. T. Corson was gracefully frocked in black ring velvet.

“Miscellaneous” Gift Party

A delightful “miscellaneous” gift parly was given recently by Mrs. J. Dower and Mrs. Trevor Carr at the home of the former in Whitaker street for Miss Mary Barry, whose marriage to Mr. McTavish will take place shortly.

The drawing-room was gay with summer blooms, roses, carnations, dahlias and Iceland poppies predominating.

Community singing, with Mrs. Carr at the piano, was enjoyed by _ the guests, and a diverting competition was won by Mrs. P. Barry. A novelty number, a teams’ 'competition, was entered into with keen enthusiasm, honours being annexed by the side captained by the guest of honour. Afternoon tea was served informally, and later the parcels, containing all manner of attractive and useful gifts, were opened by the bride-to-be. Mrs. Dower was wearing a graceful frock of black georgette accented with touches of white, and Mrs. Carr cnose n graceful frock of blue crepe-de-chine patterned in a floral design. Miss Barry’s becoming frock of leafgreen floral georgette was worn with a London tan felt hat. Among the guests were Mesdames I . Barry, T. Tangney, C. Hall. Keany, D. Barry, H. Martin, .J. Hayes, J. Keane, I-I. Hughes, A. E. Evans, W. Lannigan, G. Lynex, R. Jones, C. Quinn, K. Aislabie, Findlay, and McDonald; Misses V. Quinn and A. MeCashin.

Mang’apapa Tennis Club

Iceland poppies were chosen by the hostesses. Misses T. Bennett and T. Sim, for the adornment of the lea table in the pavilion al the Mangapapa Tennis Club’s courts on Saturday afternoon.

Among the players were Mesdames R. Good and Ansell; Misses T. Bennett, J. Nesbitt, M. Crawford, F. Carnegie, T. Sim, T. Candy. Y. Hansen, N. Cook, and T. Muirheacl

Ormond Gardening Circle

The monthly meetin? nf the Ormond Gardening Circle was held last week, Mrs. Greig presiding.

After some discussion it was decided to hold a flower display on March 13, at which the circle would be responsible for a plant and vegetable stall. The competitions resulted: —Vase of flowers: Mrs. Lovelock, 1: Miss Jennings, 2. Vase of carnations: Miss

Party At Gisborne Croquet Club

On Saturday afternoon the president. Mrs. G. Henderson, and the secretary, Mrs. H. Gilmer, were the chief guests at a delightful Christmas party organised by Mesdames -J. Nasmith and B. Zafl'er, on behalf of the members of the Gisborne Croquet Club. The function also afforded a past president, Mrs. W. Jennings, Palmerston North, a pleasant opportunity of renewing old friendships. The greens were in excellent order, and competitions were enjoyed, the winners, iMesdames J. Johnstone. H. Patterson and E. A. Faithfull, each being rewarded with an attractive gift. The players also competed for a hidden number, Mrs. J. Johnstone securing the prize. During the afternoon Mrs. Nasmith, on behalf of the members, asked Mrs. Henderson and Mrs. Gilmer to accept gifts, accompanied by beautiful posies, in recognition of their invaluable services to the club. A charming posy also was presented to Mrs. W. Alexander, whose birthday coincided with the occasion. Suitable acknowledgment was made by the recipients. The greatly-admired posies were the artistic work of Mrs. W. E. Kennedy. Quaint Chinese lanterns were suspended overhead in the pavilion, and here afternoon tea was served at ‘ables beautified with mixed flowers in rich shades of gold, the colours of the club.

Ail-Day Party

A jolly all-day “miscellaneous" gilt party was given by Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Graham at their home in Waimata Valley, at the week-end tor Miss Josephine Sherrod and Mr. Terry Fletcher, whose marriage was celebrated yesterday.

The weather was all that could be desired for an out-door function, and the picturesquely placed tennis court was the centre of attraction, the keenly - contes'ed games being thoroughly enjoyed by both players and spectators.

A buffet, luncheon was served under the trees on the lawn, and Iceland poppies gave a vivid note of colour to the tea table in the dining-room. The drawing-room was gay with shaded hydrangeas and Iceland poppies.

After tea the gift parcels were opened by the bride-to-be, revealing a varied assortment of pretty and useful articles.

The hostess was wearing a smartlytailorcd frock of cream linen, and Miss Sherratt’s becoming frock of sere brown linen was worn with a green cardigan.
