POINTLESS VICTORY I SUCCESS OF OUR JEAN | THE CARDINAL IMPRESSES | PUT IN SLASHING RUN By “Trenton” There were two very impressive . performances at the Waipa meeting on Saturday by horses claiming engagements at Ellerstie. Our Jean, a Railway Hack Handicap candidate, won the Flying Handicap from an almost impossible position. Half way through the race she was so far bade that it seemed impossible for her to win, but she went round the outside of the field to unwind a great run and at the finish she defeated her opponents pointless to win by a length and a quarter. In the Te Awamutu Cup, The Cardinal drew attention to his Auckland Cup prospects by putting in a slashing run in the straight to finish fourth after being well back most of the way. To win a race at Te Awamutu early speed is usually essential, and for that reason the performances of the above pair should be worth remembering at Ellerslie. Centrepoise A somewhat unexpected acceptor for the Manawatu Cup is Centrepoise, the top-weight and winner of the Canterbury Jockey Club Metropolitan Handicap last month. On his return to Hastings he was given a let-up, arid it was stated that he would not be raced again till January at the J earliest, but apparently he has done) well during his respite. He is engaged on all three days at Awapuni, and the valuable Wellington Cup will undoubtedly follow for him after the Manawatu meeting. 'Disdain Goes Fast Disdain, one of the favourites for the‘Railway Handicap, in which she will be ridden by L. J. Ellis, has been showing good form on the tracks at Awapuni. In a recent gallop she ran seven furlongs on a deep plough track in lmin. 31sec.. breaking 50sec. for the first half-mile. At Awapuni It is intended that Clarion Call should contest the hurdle races at the Auckland meeting, and J. Mcßae has been engaged to ride him. Clarion Call has been working well at Awapuni. Winner in Melbourne Night Raid has sired another very promising stayer in the recent Australian winner. Companion, who beat a big field at Moonee Valley recently over a mile and a quarter. Companion. who was bred at Elderslie and sold in Sydney as a yearling for 500gns. to Mr. J. P. Trihey, the owner ar.d trainer of Regular Bachelor, has been given every chance to develop, and the patient policy which has been pursued with him has borne fruit. He is a very highly bred horse, being out of the imported mare Graciosa, a daughter of Gay Crusader, and Mistrella, the grand-dam of the dual Ascot Gold Cup winner, Trimdon. His sire. Night Raid,"has only one representative in the coming yearling sale catalogue, this being a particularly good-looking colt out of Cupid’s Bow, by imported Archery, closely related to a good Australian winner in Art, who besides winning other good races was successful in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. The Cupid's Bow colt, is bred to be a genuine stayer, as he is ■ by a proved staying sire from a mare whose blood lines in Tracery, Musket, Positano, Goldsborough and Fisherman all point to success in this direction. A Gross Colt High Caste is likely to be kept going throughout the summer and run in some of the major events at Randwick at Christmas and New Year. J. T. Jamieson has been influenced in this by the short period available between the end of the spring and opening of the autumn campaigns. In addition, High Caste is such a big colt that keeping him going is almost a necessity. For instance, he was a better colt in the C. B. Fisher Plate on the last day at Flemington than he was either at Randwick or Caulfjeld. It is doubtful if Reading could have beaten him had they met in the Plate. English Racing With 14 important successes, Lord ' Rosebery heads the list, of winning owners for the flat season of 1939 in 1 England. He has won races valued at £38,494, with six horses. Four of the 14 successes were • gained by Blue Peter, who won the Derby, the Two Thousand, and the Eclipse, and was expected to carry off the St. Leger, but the war intervened. Tile winning trainer was J. L. Jarvis, who has in his charge the horses of Lord Rosebery and other well-known owners. G. Richards heads the list of successful jockeys for the thirteenth time in 14 seasons, with 155 wins out of a total of 725 races run. He has ridden 2585 winners during his career, and is only 160 winning rides behind F. Archer’s full total. W. Ncvett, the North Country jockey, comes second this season with 71 firsts out of 500 mounts.
