SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC
UNTIRING EFFORTS MR. AND MRS. J. WARD FAREWELL IN RUATORIA (Herald Correspondent.) A happy gathering took place in the Gaiety Hall, Ruatoria, last week, to farewell Mr. and Mrs. J. Ward, who left the district last Friday en route to Auckland. The organisers were Mesdames H. F. Smyth, J. Hogan and I S. C. Dalgairns, assisted by Mesdames V. L. Bragge; Ted Williams, J. G. Russell. G. Richardson and others. A pleasant surprise took place when a party of school children from the Manutahi Native School arrived to bid farewell to the guests of -the evening. The. children, who were in charge of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Mefl'an, sank beautiful farewell songs in English and Maori. On behaif of the school children, bouquets were presented Mr. Ward with a set of militsell, Mavis Bragge and Sophie Walsh, after which Miss Peggy Penfold presented Mr Ward with a set of military hair brushes and expressed regret at his leaving them, Mr. Ward having conducted the school bus for years. Mr. Ward thanked the children On behalf of the adults Mrs. I, S. C. Dalgairns presetted Mrs. Ward with a bouquet Mr I. S. C. Dalgairns spoke of the good qualif.es of Mr., and Mrs. Ward, rnd thanked them for their untiring services given to the public, and wished them happiness in their new home. “True Friend of the Maori” On behalf of the .Maoris in the district, Mr. H. Poananga spoke in the high Ist terms of the good qualities o' Mr. Ward, who was a true friend to the Maori On behalf of the tennis club, Mr. Poananga presented Mr. Ward with a cheque. In Dakin,-; a prose dal ion of a leather suit case to the guests of honour, Mr. J. \J. Birch, en behalf of the bowling club, -pcße of the great assistance Mr. Ward had been to the cl.to. Mr. J. 0. Musgyive, Gisborne, who has taken over Wards Transport, extended the good wishes of the Gisborne carriers to Mr. and Mrs. Ward Music for dancing was, played by the Night Owl orchestra, ana extras by Mr. Lcs Dalziel. ‘The hostesses 'Crve-i a dainty supper, after which -dancing continued until a late hour.
