FIRST CARNIVAL

1939-40 SEASON GISBORNE SWIMMERS MANY KEEN FINISHES Mild weather favoured the Gisborne Amateur Surf and Swimming Club for its opening carnival of the 1939-40 season, 'held at the iMacrae Bath last evening. An interesting programme of swimming races, diving and water polo was presented .by the club members, and the .fixture merited much greater public support than was accorded it. Although the class of swimming was not as high as may be expected later in the season when the local champions have reached top form, keen swimming was the order of the evening and many issues were decided on the touch. Misses 'Norma and Kathleen Henderson share the honours in the competition for the 'Gordon Cup, two distances for which were decided last evening. The sisters each gained a lirst and a second. By winning the 33 11 -3yds. •boys’ handicap, D. McGregor placed himself in the lead in the Lockie Cup series. K. iMorse showed, perhaps, the best form in the men’s events, winning both the 1100yds handicap and 100yds medley handicap. The programme concluded with a water-polo match, which was staged as a try-out for the swimmers. Results in Detail 100yds (Men’s Handicap.—First Heat (4 starters): K. Morse, 3sec., 1; D.
