SALVATION ARMY
NEW DOMINION CHIEF COMMISSIONER j. E. SMITH (Pnr Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Lieutenant-Commissioner J. Evan Smith, territorial commander for Wales and the western territory of the United Kingdom, has been appointed territorial commander of the New Zealand Salvation Army, stated a cable message received by LieutenantColonel Grattan, Chief Secretary from London headquarters to-day. The appointment was made by General Carpenter, the new commander of the Army. The new commissioner, who was born in London, served the founder of the Army in a secretarial capacity and for many years was private secretary to General Booth. He saw work in many lands, including New Zealand, became Chief Secretary in South Africa in 1931 and was appointed territorial commander of Wales and the western territory three years ago.
