PATRIOTIC FUNDS

DISTRICT CAMPAIGN IMMEDIATE START CLOTHES FOR REFUGEES RED CROSS EFFORTS A campaign for funds for patriotic purposes was discussed at a meeting o: the executive of the Gisborne subcentre of the Red Gross Society, when it was stated that an immediate start could be made with the raising of funds. The Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society had been appointed sole collecting* and expending agent for such funds on behalf of sick and wounded soldiers. The women's divisio i reported that four eases of reconditioned clothing had been forwarded to headquarters for Polish and Jewish refugees. It vas reported that this branch of the work was still being continued, and it was hoped to arrange for a further dispatch in the near future. Thanks were expressed to the public who had rssisted. particularly the schools. A pressing need for lemons existed in the military camps near Christchurch and Wellington. The sub-centre had been fortunate in being able to send forward a weekly supply from donors, to whom thanks were expressed. A donation of £6 was acknowledged from the Rere School and of £l4 Gs from the Gisborne Young Farmers’ Club, members of which had conducted a weight-estimating competition at’the recent A. and P. Show in Gisborne. In regal’d to the health camp, it was recommended that every effort should be made by members of the Red Cross Society to help the matron and staff with the children on occasions when they were taken to the beach or for other outings. Examination Results Results of the recent first aid examination were reported as follows: Medallion.—Mrs. Lillian Woods. Honours. Mesdames Margaret O’Connell (Te Karaka), Stella O’Meara, Inez Campbell, Elsie Holdaway, Nida Nellie Palmer, Unice Sybil Baillie and Jessie Louise French; Misses Molly Plodgson, Nancy Murphy (Muriwai), Jessie R'obb, Inis Somervell, Lorna Scott, Phyllis Tier, Ngairie White (Walngake), Juliet Williams (Muriwai), and Florence Vicars Ormiston.
