UNWELCOME VISITOR
MIDNIGHT INTRUDER PERIOD OF PROBATION Charged with being a rogue and vagabond within the meaning of the Police Offences Act, 1927, in that 'he was found without lawful excuse at night in I-larete Tuhaka’s residence, a Maori labourer, Turanga Mauheni. alias Rihara Mauheni, aged U2. appeared recently before Messrs. V. G. H. Rickard and M. Gudgeon, J.P.s, in the Tikitiki Police Court, and was placed on probation for four years. In addition he was ordered to take cut a prohibition order against himself. He pleaded guilty to the charge. The was conducted for the police by Constable N. H. Tuck. Constable Tuck explained that the complainant lived in a house that stood several hundred yards back from the :oad and also some distance from her nearest neighbour. On the night of the offence she had only the company of a 14-year-old daughter and three younger children. At about midnight she was awakened by a noise at a window frame she knew she had latched, and saw the accused standing at tiie open window, leaning through the opening. He refused to leave, climbing through the window and saying that he had an important message to i, Oliver. When he entered the room he turned out Ihe tight, and asked the complainant m remove one of the children from tiie side of the bed. Mrs. Tuhika railed her daughter and asked her to telephone for the police, the accused then leaving hastily.
When interviewed by the police the accused said that he had gone tell e house to look for his wife, and l ad entered by the window because (he doors were locked. Addressing the accused the Bench crew attention to the seriousness of ti e charge. but said that the leniency o' 1 the court would be extended to iiim because he had not interferred with Mrs. Tuhaka. He would have to abstain from liquor m the future.
