BATTLE WATCHED
FRENCH SHIP’S PERIL PASSENGERS’ STORIES BRITISH CHASE FLEEING NAZI CRAFT (Reed. Dec. 15, 3 p.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 14. The Montevideo correspondent of the Associated Press of America states that 62 prisoners were released from the Graf von Spee. The French liner Formosa arrived at Montevideo. The passengers were suffering from shock and many were almost incoherent.
They described how throughout the day, wearing lifebelts, they watched the battle. The Formosa made full speed towards the Uruguayan coast when she sighted the Graf von Spee which was rapidly gaining when the Ajax appeared, radioing the Achilles and Exeter for support. The Formosa manoeuvred behind the smoke screen put up by the Ajax. The Achilles, opening fire, sped by towards the Graf von Spee. Then the Exeter appeared and the Graf von Spee fled with the British ships following.
Later the Graf von Spee, the Achilles and the Ajax again were sighted in a running fight.
