MAORI GIRL’S DEATH
TRAGEDY AT WHATATUTU BULLET WOUND IN HEAD RIFLE BESIDE BODY (Special to the Herald.) TE KARAKA, this day. A tragedy occurred on the Dome station, Whatatutu, yesterday afternoon, when Katie Stevens, aged 18. a Maori, was found dead with a bullet wound in her head. The girl, who was employed as a domestic servant on the station, was seen at about 5 o’clock, and about a qiu. rler -f an hour later was found dead on a bed in a room in a shepherd’-: where. Investigations showed a bullet wound under the chin, and a 22 calibre rifle was found lying alongside her. The wound was blackened with smoke, indicating that the shot was fired from very close oirarters The girl was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Heta Stevens, Waihirere. An inquest will be held in Whatatutu to-moirow afternoon.
