BOOKS FOR TRANSPORTS

Already there has been an encouraging response to the appeal made by the Gisborne Returned Soldiers' Association for reading material suitable for supply to the transports which will leave early next year bearing the First Echelon of the Second New Zealand Division to an unknown destination. The deliveries of books made to the association’s office, and to the Herald Office on behalf of the association, comprise a large assortment of publications. with a substantial proportion of fiction, in excellent condition. The association will send the books forward in instalments, and so far has not had to discard any literary efforts of the type covered by an instruction not to forward “junk.” It is hoped that before the end of the year, this district will have provided several hundred books in good condition for the use of the troops while at sea.
