SUGAR BEET SEED BELIEVED IN ICELAND HAWKE’S BAY SUPPLIES Several Hawke’s Bay farmers are suffering a handicap as a result o. the British blockade. Some weeks ago it was announced that a consignment of sugar beet seed of selected varieties was being sent to Hawke’s Bay for sowing under seedpi eduction contract with the Government. Advice now received by Mr. J. W. 1 aimer instructor in agriculture in Southern Hawke’s Bay, indicates it is'unlikely that the seed will reach New Zealand in time for sowing. It appears that the seed, which comprised consignments of the most successful European varieties, was shipped on a German vessel prior to the outbreak of war and that this vessel was one of those chased into neutral ports in the first few days of hostilities. Indications are that the seed which would have gone to Hawke’s Bay is now frozen in somewhere in Iceland.
