FARMERS’ UNION
PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE PRIMARY PRODUCTION COUNCIL MEMBERSHIP A meeting of the Poverty Bay provincial executive of the Farmers Union was held in the office of the secretary. 'Mr. C. Blackburn, yesterday. The chair was taken by Mr. E. U. Richardson, in place of the president, Mr. J. E. Benson, who was reported to be in hospital. Others present were Messrs. W. E. Honey, R. D. Dvmock, J. E. Brosnahan, B. W. Mossman, F. C. Charteris, and R. W. Coop. A circular from head office urged that steps should be taken to have the union represented at sittings of the transport licensing authorities. —The president, and failing him, a vice-pre-sident, was deputed to attend. A circular from the Auckland provincial executive requested all union members to follow Captain Rushworth’s example in resigning from the primary production councils, “pending a settlement with the Government of outstanding questions hindering efficient production.’’ The circular explained that Captain Rushworth had resigned from the council failing an assurance having been obtained from the Government that it was prepared to give effect to the conditions set out by the executive as being essential to ensure increased production or even to maintain production at its present level. The causes of the decline in production were regarded as being due to Government policy, and there appeared no possible chance of the problems being solved by the council with their extremely limited powers and order of reference.
The Poverty Bay executive briefly discussed the matter, but no action was taken.
