“Iron Lung” Delivered The special respirator designed for the treatment of cases of paralysis and other diseases affecting the breathing organs, and presented to the Cook Hospital Board by Lord Nuffield, arrived to-day by the Margaret W. from Auckland. Known as the “iron lung,” this device is capable of holding a fully-grown person, and its central feature is a wooden case, with an observation panel in the upper side. The patient undergoing treatment is placed in this case, with his head protruding, and the pressure of air in the case is raised and lowered by a pulsating mechanism, acting upon the walls of the chest in such a way that the normal actions of breathing are reproduced. The machine weighs about two tons, and occupies considerable space. It will be assembled at the Cook Hospital within the next week, it is expected, for purpose of trials and demonstrations.
