CRICKETER RETURNS
O’BRIEN OF CANTERBURY PERFORMANCES IN U.K. The Canterbury crickets, F. P. O’Brien, who has been playing as a professional for Northamptonshire has arrived back. When he qualified in September, 1937, O'Brien played for half the season, then left, participating in 1G out of 17 games, and making 424 runs. In the 1938 season he played in 22 out of 24 games and made over 900 runs. As a change bowler he took valuable wickets, including Sutcliffe, Compton, Constantine, Hutton and Edrich. He also acted as coach to the LeightonBuzzard club during his qualification period and played in Lord Lilford’s eleven. O’Brien’s engagement was renewed for the 1940 season, but as county cricket is unlikely now because of the war he will probably not return to England for some time. He booked his passage for his return before the war and then had to wait two months for a boat. He considers that the best Plunket Shield team here would beat some of the counties, but it would not be up to the standard of the best county sides.
