DOXFORD ENGINES HN U.S. SHIPS The American Scantic Line motor ship Mormacgull has been launched by the Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Corporation, Chester. Pa. The !Mormacgull is a sister ship of the Donald McKay, which recently visited Scandinavian ports on her maiden voyage front New York.
She is of particular interest on account of her machinery installation. Built by the Sun Company, licensees of Messrs. William 'Doxford and Sons, Limited, Sunderland, she is propelled by a Doxford-type engine of 8000 b.h.p., with four cylinders. The builders have, however, not hesitated to make a notable modification in the construction by employing a rotaryty.pe blower, gear-driven from the crankshaft.
In the Doxford engines built in Great Britain a piston-type blower is almost invariably employed, except in the few instances when turbo scavenging has been adopted.
Five similar ships with Sun-Doxford machinery are being built, and lour motor-ships of equal size, which are under construction at another yard, will be propelled by Nordtoerg engines, four four-stroke units in each ship being coupled to a single propeller through gearing.
