VANDALISM IN WAIROA
FURTHER ACTS REPORTED TERN NESTS ROBBED BIRDS DISAPPEAR (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. “A dirty trick!” This was the term used . 'by Mr. V. : E. Winter at the ■monthly meeting of the Wairoa Harbour (Board yesterday, when it was reported that someone had destroyed the eggs of the tern nesting on the Wairoa (Beach and that the birds had disappeared. Other acts of vandalism were reported, and the 'board decided to take steps in an endeavour to stamp it out. In his monthly report the pilot, Mr. W. 'Jane, said that someone had destroyed the eggs of the tern which were nesting on the beach, and as a result of being disturbed the birds had disappeared. (The act, he added, was a serious one as the birds were protected. The pilot also reported that considerable vandalism had taken place at the signal station, and some of the acts had been serious. At the main wharf planks had been pulled up and the punt had been cast loose on several occasions. Referring to the report the chairman, Mr. J. Corkill, said the position was becoming serious, and he thought the board should draw the attention of the police to it.
On the motion of Mr. G. D. Tod, it was decided that the police and the night watchman be asked to keep a strict watch in an endeavour to put a stop to the trouble, and that notices prohibiting access to the wharf and the board’s sheds be erected. In connection with the interference with the birds at the beach, the chairman suggested that the pilot be asked to endeavour to identify the culprits, should offences of this nature be repeated, with a view to prosecuting them.
