STOCK CHAMPIONS

ROYAL SHOW AWARDS SUCCESSFUL OPENING (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, this day. The opening day of the Centennial Royal Show at Invercargill yesterday was a happy augury for the success of Southland’s great farming contribution to the centennial celebrations of the Dominion. In beautifully fine weather, judging was begun in the sheep, cattle and pig sections and was well advanced at the end of the day. leaving a record entry of horses to be judged to-day. In all sections the stock was fully up to expectations, .and the judges commented enthusiastically on the high standard of the exhibits as being fully worthy of representing their breeds at the Royal show. The list of centennial Royal champions was an impressive collection of the cream of New Zealand’s live stock. Because of the floods in the North Island, some of the judges were delayed and did not arrive until the middle of the afternoon, after an exciting aeroplane trip through stormy conditions in the lower half of the North Island and a fast motor trip from Taieri aerodrome. For this reason the judging of some sections was delayed and was not completed yesterday. However, about 1300 of the 2162 entries were judged during the day.
