PORT BOWEN’S WOOL
DOUBLE MISFORTUNE In the Doric Star reported sunk by enemy action, presumably in the South Atlantic, was wool from the stranded Port Bowen, salvaged from the Port Line vessel by lighters in the early weeks of the stranding, only to find its last “wool store" at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The Doric Star carried 111 casks of tallow and 1917 bales of wool from the stranded steamer. Both the wool and the tallow had been loaded into the Port Bowen in Australia, and when the Port Bowen met her fate at Castled iff the coastal vessels Breeze and Kapuni transhipped the load to Wellington, where it was loaded into the Doric Star, which also loaded a cargo of meat at New Plymouth before leaving for Australia. It was on October 20 that the Doric Star finished her loading from New Zealand ports and all the refrigerating space was occupied by dairy produce and meat. She also carried a quantity of wool which was supplemented with the Wanganui lo.t on her reaching Australia.
