UNIFORMITY WANTED
WAIROA TAXI FARES SUBMISSIONS TO BE MADE LICENSING AUTHORITY (Special to tbg Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Reference to the great variation in taxi fares in different country districts was made by the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr.. E. J. Phelan, when dealing with applications for taxi cab licenses in Wairoa yesterday. The licenses were granted in each case for a period of 12 months, but the question of fares was reserved to enable the taxi proprietors to confer and make submissions to the authority concerning them. Mr. Phelan stated that efforts were to be made to bring about a more universal fare in the country districts, where there were great variations at present. He suggested that the Wairoa taxi proprietors should review their charges so that this district could be brought into line with others. It was not the intention that the fares should be raised to such an extent that they would interfere with the amount of traffic handled, but it was desired that they should not be so low that they could interfere with bus fares. He added that the question would be attended to as soon as possible after he had heard the submissions of the taxi proprietors here. The following applications were granted:—C. Saba, L. A. Mclver, M. L. Shaw, C. L. Poyzer, C. C. Poyzer, J. Lawrence (2 cabs), if. M. lopa, Z. Saba, V. Brown and L. Johnstone. Goods Services The following transfers were granted:—Estate of A. J., Raching'er to A. L. Gordon, Limited, Wairoa; W. J. Browne to A. B. Pittar, Mohaka; L. W. Mildon to E. G. Mildon, Erasertown. Amendment N. Bluck, Nuliaka, was granted an amendment ,to provide for eight additional authorities to carry goods for the Public Works Department. It was explained by Mr. D. H. Withers, secretary to the Carriers’ Association, that ,there was no increase in the number of vehicles being operated by the applicant. He was at present operating under a temporary license and this application was simply to “put his house in order." Renewals The following renewals were granted:—F. R. Smith. Wairoa: F. Foley, Wairoa; W. A. Burton, Kotemaori; and W. Henare, Wairoa. New Applications A. McCorkindale was granted an authority to carry goods between Wairoa and Waiatai Valley.
