Mr. W. Barrington Miller, London, who has arrived at Auckland, was a passenger on the British steamer recently chased by a" submarine when en route to New Zealand. Mr. Miller intends spending the Christmas and New Year holidays in Rotorua before coming on to Gisborne.
The resident A:A. patrol at Whakatane, Mr. C. Walker, visited .Gisiborne yesterday. He had made a tour of the East Coast -scenic highway via Cape Runaway in order to :be able to give advice on the route to motorists intending to make ’the trip from his territory. iMr. Walker, who spoke highly of the scenic attractions on the Coast, left to-day for the north by wlay of the Motu scenic route.
Seven Gisborne passengers were aboard an overseas liner which berthed at Auckland this week, after a voyage from England, via Panama, in the course of which the vessel eluded an attempt by an enemy submarine to bring about her destruction. They comprised Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Ladd, Mangapapa, with their two daughters, Messrs. F. H. Lawton and J. H. Lawton, Rutene road, Kaiti, and Mr. W. Barrington Miller. Mr. F. H. Lawton and his son reached Gisborne last evening, and- the Ladd family were expected to return home to-day. Mr. Miller is remaining in the north for a few weeks, according to present Information.
A statement that this probably would be his last sitting in Wairoa as it was the intention to extend the No.
2 licensing district, was made by the No. 1 Licensing Authority, Mr. E. J. Phelan, at a sitting in Wairoa yesterday. Mr. Phelan took the opportunity of thanking the legal profession, the Carriers’ Association and the carriers generally for the many courtesies extended to him during his visits to Wairoa. On behalf of the legal profession, Mr. C. V. Chamberlain stated that he desired to thank the authority for the courtesy it had always shown. Speaking for the transport operators, he said the decisions of the authority always had been accepted in the spirit in which they had been given. For the carriers he wanted to thank Mr. Phelan for all he had done. The carriers had realised that ne was always out to help them. —Special.
